The season of spring has begun, according to the calendar. The sun has been shining more often, and soon, that wonderful warm weather will return and call everyone to come outside and enjoy it! Why not, you might be asking yourself, use this time to do some good in your community while also getting some killer exercise?

The Sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi, a sorority on Quincy University’s campus, will be hosting their third annual Strides for Shannon 5K Color Run and Fun Walk on Saturday, April 11.

The event, which snakes around both the north and main campuses of Quincy University, holds a very special meaning to the Alpha Omicron Pi (AOPi) sisters. In the Fall of 2012, one of their fellow sister, Shannon Peters, was involved in a near-fatal accident when she was struck by a speeding car along Chestnut Street. Over the months that followed, Peters’ underwent several surgeries on her brain and now lives at home with her family still slowly bouncing back from her terrifying ordeal. That spring, her AOPi sisters started the Strides for Shannon Color Run to help raise money for Shannon Peters’ medical payments and recovery costs.

Now, three years later, the sisters of AOPi are still reaching out, not only to their fellow students, but to the Quincy community for help in funding their sister’s recovery. According to Ashley Cahill, an AOPi sister involved in the event, participants can sign up from now through to the day of the run. Cahill also says that, for more information, or to sign up, everyone in the community can either visit 3rd Annual Strides For Shannon Run/Fun Walk on Facebook, or contact Ashley Reese at Strides4Shannon@gmail.com.

It may be too late for our New Year’s resolutions, but why not make a summertime promise to get healthy while doing some good at the same time? Together, the Quincy community could make the third annual Strides for Shannon run the most successful yet!
