The 34 year history of Wavering Aquatic Center will come to an end this Sunday as the Quincy Park District will close the doors of the center at 6 p.m. not only for the season, but for forever. Sunday will be the last day for swimmers to enjoy the pool they have had since 1981.

The Park District saw voters defeat a $5.5 Million referendum in April by some 300 votes. The money from that referendum would have led to renovations at the facility. With the referendum's failure, the Park District decided to close the pool for good at the end of the season which turns out to be this Sunday.

They will continue to fund and operate the Indian Mounds Pool which will remain open this summer through August 16.  The demise of Wavering Aquatic Center has been coming slowly over the years, but with the pools at the Kroc Center and Quincy University opening over the last few years, the competition for swimmers has increased.

If you want to be one of the final swimmers at Wavering Pool the cost is $3 for swimmers ages 18 to 61 and $2.50 for swimmers ages 17 and under and swimmers ages 62 and older.

A little piece of Quincy's history and some memories will unfortunately go down the drain when the last drop leaves Wavering Pool Sunday night.
