This historic anniversary happened on Sunday which explains why there was little or no mention of it. It was August 6, 1945 and the United States was involved with World War Two on two fronts, in Europe and also in the South Pacific. Supplies were waning with fighting going on in two different parts of the world at the same time. So the decision was made by then President Harry Truman to utilize an atomic bomb for the first time ever.
In a world of shopping malls, mega markets, Walmarts and large grocery outlets, there sits in Quincy one of the last remaining small family-owned grocery stores in Winking Market at 416 South Fourth Street.
Each and every day there are two Amtrak trains that serve the Quincy area with trips to and from Chicago. The Illinois Zephyr leaves Quincy at 6:12 mornings and returns each night at 10:23. The Carl Sandburg departs Quincy each night at 5:30 and arrives in Chicago at 9:58. That train then returns the next morning at 7:35 from Chicago and arrives in Quincy at 12:03 p.m. With both train routes ending in West Quincy, I always wondered how the train actually turns around in West Quincy to prepare for the trip back to Chicago.

Let me start by saying that while I've been in Quincy for the last 14 years, I'm not technically from Quincy as in "born and raised". So I don't know a lot of the traditions that Quincyans take part in. So I asked our Facebook audience exactly how you know you're really FROM Quincy. Here are some of my favorite responses...
We asked and you voted...A LOT! Thousands of you voted--sometimes more than once (but don't worry, we scrapped any duplicates). So the totally non-scientific results are in! Here are the BEST ice cream spots in the Tri-States...
