Hannibal Parks and Rec also has a number of fun summertime programs that will get underway within the next few weeks.

The first Movies in the Park at Huckleberry Park will be on May 29. Big Hero 6 will be the first movie of the summer. Admission is free. The movie will begin at approximately 9 p.m. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Snacks will be sold by the Hannibal High School Dance Team, and before the movie there will be a demonstration from the Marion County 4-H robot team.

The Big Dirt Dig will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, in front of the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center, 301 Warren Barrett Drive. HPR staff members will provide a huge pile of dirt for youngsters to play in. The HPR back hoe will also be parked nearby so children can see how the dirt was moved. Diane Addison, director of Parents as Teachers, said youngsters can bring small shovels, buckets, toy trucks or loaders to play in the dirt. “Your child can dig, pour, fill, unload, sift, shovel and get messy, while having fun!” The event is free but cash donations will be accepted and will go toward the construction of a family-oriented Born to Learn Trail in Huckleberry Park to be opened in September.

The Color in Motion 5K fun run/walk was canceled April 25 due to inclement weather and was rescheduled to June 20. The location has been changed from Riverview Park to the downtown area, starting and ending at Admiral Coontz Recreation Center. Registration is once again available on the Active website.  Color in Motion for Kids in Motion begins at 9 a.m. June 20, with registration starting at 8 a.m. Packet pickup is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, June 19 at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center, 301 Warren Barrett Drive and before the event starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at Admiral Coontz Recreation Center. Registration must be made by June 5 to be guaranteed the correct T-shirt size on race day. The cost is $15 for youth 12 and under and $25 for adults 13 and over. Teams of five or more people receive a discount of $5 per person.
