Did You Know That Corned Beef and Cabbage is Not an Irish Meal?

It is funny how we Americans consume certain foods with certain holidays. Like turkey on Thanksgiving Day and corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day.  Both could be eaten anytime of the year, but we seem to usually devour it on the appropriate holiday instead. Of course the turkey is an All-American bird and it fits the holiday in November, but, in what may surprise many, corned beef and cabbage is not the main staple in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day.

$6,000 in Prizes Will Be Given Away During the ‘Smokin’ Good Times BBQ Challenge’

Our family couldn't wait. The winter was long - some might say torturous - so at the very first sign of decent weather we went outside and cooked on the grill. A friend of mine co-hosts a barbecue show, and his show has decided that the time change should officially mark the start of grilling season. I think that's a great (or grate?) idea. In June, the Quincy Knights of Columbus will host the Smokin Good Times BBQ Challenge, so if you haven't done any outdoor cooking, you'll want to start practicing soon. Thousands of dollars are up for grabs!

Call it Table Tennis or Ping Pong, it is still a fun game to play and a great way to get some exercise as well. As a two time winner of the Rome, New York summer table tennis championships as a kid, I found ping pong to be quite a bit of fun to play.

The Callie Frese Fundraiser is This Saturday at the K of C in Quincy

Callie Frese, age 5, the daughter of Andy and Crissy Frese of Quincy, has Cerebral Palsy. She is in need of a service dog to help with lots of things — helping to guide her wheelchair, pick up anything she may have dropped, providing comfort and a calming sense for the child, etc. But there is one thing the guide dog can do that is invaluable: it can sense seizure activity in Callie before it happens.

5th Annual Cadan’s Carnival For CDH Awareness Take Place at Quincy Knights of Columbus – an Interview With Tiffany Frericks

The 5th annual Cadan's Carnival Halloween event will take place October 20 at the Quincy Knights of Columbus. The carnival is held in memory of Cadan Christopher Frericks, son of Tiffany and Rome Frericks, who passed away only weeks after his birth due to complications from Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a birth defect where the diaphragm does not properly form, allowing the abdominal organs to move up into the chest. The carnival is held in Cadan's honor, and raises awareness of CDH and funds for CDH research. Cadan's mom, Tiffany, was kind enough to give us a few moments of her time for an interview.

Getting Kids in Quincy Started With the Game of Golf

Quincy's annual Little Peoples Golf Tournament took place earlier in the month. Anyone golfer that has children can tell you that it's not the easiest sport to get young kids involved in. If you take your kids at the wrong time of day, you'll spend more time letting others play through than you will playing your own game. Luckily for kids in Quincy, there are some great programs geared towards helping them get started in the game.
