Tax day is rapidly approaching and those of you procrastinators will actually catch a break this year in that the due date has been pushed back to April 17. So why the 17th? The tax deadline is always pushed back when April 15 falls on a weekend as it does this year. Since Monday is April 16, it is also Emancipation Day, acknowledging the abolishment of slavery in the District of Columbia. Therefore, it is a legal holiday in Washington, D.C.

The legal holiday, under tax law, will affect the filing of taxes nationwide so it has been pushed back to April 17 this year.  Next year tax day will fall on the usual date of Monday, April 15, 2019.
