So there I was Wednesday night standing behind home plate, a position I was so familiar with some 35 years ago, waiting for one Dennis Oliver to deliver the opening pitch of the night at the Quincy Gems home opener.  It brought back so many memories for me to be behind the plate once again.

The Quincy Gems 2017 season is underway and they just announced not one, but FIVE fireworks nights for this summer!

When the season began for the Quincy University Baseball Hawks little did they know that they would be making a trip to the NCAA Division II World Series.

When it comes to purchasing food, the United States leads the way in the safe distribution of food to the public. Safety measures are taken in packaging and delivery as well.  It got me to thinking about the pioneer days when people didn't have the safeguards for storing foods like we have now.

We are now 3 weeks and a day away from the home opener for the Quincy Gems. On May 31st, the Gems will open up their home season with a game against the Danville Dans at historic Q.U. Stadium. It will also be Y101 Night at the ballpark as well. While the excitement of a brand new season will be felt in Quincy the disappointment cannot go unnoticed in Hannibal in that the Hannibal Cavemen will not

It happens every year usually around the end of school when athletes realize that their athletic careers have abruptly ended with a season and career ending loss. At this time of year you can open up the Herald Whig and see it in the faces of the losing players.   If you ever played a sport you know how gut wrenching it is when you realize that you have played your last game ever, be it football,

I guess it was a sign of the times. Were you aware that law-abiding gun owners last year were given the opportunity while attending a Cardinal Baseball game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to drop off their firearms at a specially outfitted armored truck before they entered the stadium instead of leaving them in their unattended vehicles in the parking lot?

I was moving some boxes the other day at my house and I came across my large box of baseball cards. It got me to wonder about how many baseball cards I traded with my friends, and just how many I ruined just to make noise on my bike. My guess it was in the hundreds.

If you have ever played the game of baseball, and I did for many years, the game never leaves your blood. This is why I hold onto the belief that I can still hit that ball that wins Game 7 of the World Series.  I will go to my grave thinking that way.

Since the last out of the Cubs World Series clinching victory over the Indians, I have been had the bug.  What bug you ask? The bug to go to the batting cage and smash some baseballs around is attacking me like I would a fastball. The bad news was that the Quincy Park District’s Batting Cage at Upper Moorman Park has been closed. The good news is that it will open for the season today at 3:30 p.m.
