A new survey has ranked the 150 largest metropolitan areas in America from most educated to least educated. I'll be honest, in a million years I would have never guessed any of the Top 5, though I might have been able to guess the cities in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri that ranked the highest.

According to WalletHub (a website that's always putting out cool lists like this), Chicago ranks 31st in the nation, Des Moines comes in 44th, and St. Louis ranks 66th. Kansas City (74th), Springfield, Missouri (90th), Peoria (114th), Davenport (123rd) and Rockford (148th) also made the list.

Are you ready for the Top 5 nationwide? I thought these were surprising:

  1. Ann Arbor, Michigan
  2. Raleigh, North Carolina
  3. Durham, North Carolina
  4. Provo, Utah
  5. Manchester, New Hampshire

How does one determine how well educated a city is? WalletHub says, "We examined each city across nine key metrics. Among the set are educational attainment, the percentage of workers with jobs in computer, engineering and science fields as well as the quality and size of each metro area’s universities."
