The first of the year always gets people to take a step back and evaluate just where they are and where they want to be. For instance with tax season upon us, many people are looking at their household income from 2012 and wondering just where they stack up with the rest of Americans.

The complete numbers for 2012 are not in yet but according to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau figures the estimated median income for for 2011 shows Maryland with the highest total of $70,004 per household and Mississippi the lowest with $36,919 per household (Puerto Rico, an American territory was actually much lower at $18,660 per household).

In case you were wondering, Illinois came in at $53,234, Missouri at $45,247 and Iowa at $49,427.
