In reading the Sunday Quincy Herald Whig yesterday I noticed the front page headline of "Avoid the Burn of Melanoma". Obviously a story about detecting skin cancer and ways to prevent it including the wearing of a brimmed hat to avoid exposure to the sun. I read the article and moved on to the next story to read before my eyes settled on a picture of people walking at Moorman Park Saturday in the Making Strides Against Cancer event. The picture showed people walking to raise awareness of breast cancer. But having just read the story from the front page I found it ironic that of the 52 people walking to fight cancer I counted in the picture only two were wearing a hat to protect themselves from the burn of Melanoma. Everyone wants to look great and having a tan helps that to happen but please don't do it at the risk of shortening your life. Wear a hat and protect yourself. Better to look good and live longer than to be tanned and die young.
