He comes to Quincy every February and brings his vast knowledge of sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals, and is kind enough to share that knowledge with the Quincy Exchange Club. He is Rick Hummel, the Baseball Hall of Fame Sports Writer for the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Hummel spoke to a huge crowd of Exchange Club members and guests today at Quincy's Stoney Creek Inn.

The Quincy Exchange Club's 12th Annual Character Champions Seminar will be held this week at Quincy University. Some 200 team leading senior high athletes plus 30 coaches will be representing 10 area high schools at the presentation on Tuesday, September 9, that will feature Bruce Boguski. Wednesday's seminar will be for some 100 area junior high students and 20 coaches.

The 8th Annual Smoke on the River BBQ Contest will be held this Friday and Saturday at Kesler Park in Quincy. The Quincy Exchange Club hosts the event with nearly $6,000 worth of prizes being awarded Saturday afternoon to the winners. To kick off the event, the Exchange Club will sponsor a Hog Roast at Kesler Park in front of The Dock from 5 to 8 p.m.

It was May 16, 2009, five years ago today, when I lost my best friend and hundreds of others did likewise with the passing of John Tripp. A year ago, I started to write about John, but I kept deleting what I was writing. I finally decided that what I wrote last year still fits today. I wrote it from my heart a year ago and the words still say everything I want to say today so here it is.
