The Big Dog Almost Ended up in the Wrong Quincy

An important anniversary, my arrival in Quincy, surprisingly passed without my recognizing it.  The year was 1978 when I got a call out of the blue from a Gary Schmedding of WTAD Radio and KHQA-TV on a warm May day.

Happy Birthday to My Dad

March 11 has always brought memories and good times for me.  My father was born on March 11 and every year we would celebrate his birthday and every year he would get the same birthday gift from me. That gift was two tickets to opening day of the baseball season. I haven't been able to give him tickets for 29 years now. He passed away in 1985 from Alzheimer's or dementia as it was known then.

A Dog in the Eye May Cost Us All

So there you are, sitting at beautiful Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, watching a Royals baseball game, when all of a sudden you get hit in the eye with, not a ball, but of all things, a hot dog. 24th & Harrison in Quincy Needs a Traffic Light

It way May 25, 1978. My first day ever in the City of Quincy having moved here from the  Kansas City area. I spent the first week in a hotel trying to find a place to live. I remember being at the intersection of 24th and Harrison at the four-way stop. It felt like I spent three birthdays trying to get through that intersection that day.

Sometimes You Need to Put Things in Perspective

I moved to Quincy 34 years ago leaving behind my parents in Kansas City. Dad passed away in 1985 while I was on the air and Mom passed away 18 months ago and I was with her when she left us. I went back to Kansas City early Sunday morning for the first time since her passing and drove across US 36 to I-35 and arrived in K.C. some 3 and a half hours later.  My mission was to stop by their grave sites at Mt. Olivet Cemetery and go by the old homestead.

Are You Ready for Toll Roads?

Toll roads are nothing new.  There are several in the State of Illinois, mostly around Chicagoland and Northern Illinois.  Missouri does not yet have one, but recently there has been plenty of talk about making I-70 a toll road from St. Louis to Kansas City.

With states running out of funding for roadway repairs and new construction there is no doubt in my mind we will start seeing toll roads pop up all over the place.
