The Big Dog is Ready for The Batting Cage to Open April 11

With the advent of the 2014 baseball season upon us, the Batting Cage bug has hit me. The bug to go to the batting cage and smash some baseballs around is attacking me like I would a fastball. The bad news is that the Quincy Park District’s Batting Cage is closed. The good news is that it will open for the season on Friday, April 11 at 3:30pm. The countdown is on.

Here is How Quincy’s St. Patrick’s Parade Got Its Start

It was a morning in 1986 when I was working at 99Q Radio with Dennis Oliver. He was just finishing up his morning show and I was beginning my mid-day stint (after working the morning show on WTAD earlier that morning). It was about a week before St. Patrick’s Day and I went up to D.O. and said we need to have a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Quincy.

New Flag Mission Accomplished! The Red White & Blue is Flying Proudly Again

For weeks there has been a very tattered flag "hanging" on a flag pole between 8th and 9th on Broadway in Quincy. I had hoped the owner would have removed or replaced it. That had not happened. No matter where this flag would have been located, it needed to be disposed of. The fact that it was located on Quincy's busiest street made it even worse. Well, I am happy to report that tattered American Flag has been replaced. With the help of my friend, Tim Gottman of Sign Pro, we took down the old flag and hoisted up a new American Flag, which was donated by the Illinois Veteran's Home.

They Say New Technology is Good and We Are About to Find Out

Today at Y101 Radio is the equivalent of the first day at a new school. The initial day at that new school is always an anxiety attack waiting to happen only because of the newness of it all. Well, such is the case for all of us here at the radio station.  Today marks the first day of our usage of a brand new broadcast system and like day one of being in that new school, it is day one for us.

Jerry Leggett’s Blue Devils Were Also Mike Hellenthal’s Blue Devils

Saturday marked the birthday of former Quincy High School Blue Devil Coach Mike Hellenthal who now resides in Marion, North Carolina. So I thought I would take the time to spotlight a man that deserves to get a lot more credit than he ever got for helping the Blue Devil basketball program become one of the most talked about teams in the State of Illinois and beyond. I first met Mike when I arrived in Quincy back in 1978. I came to Quincy to work at WTAD Radio and became the play-by-play announcer for the Blue Devils at perhaps the best time any announcer could walk into Blue Devil Gymnasium.

Have You Ever Been Replaced? These People Were!

This week marked the 73rd birthday of Alex Trebek who announced earlier this year that he was going to be leaving as host of the long standing television show 'Jeopardy.' It got me to thinking about who Trebek replaced as the host of the original 'Jeopardy' show. The answer to that is Art Fleming, who left the show back in 1984. Can you name replacements for other people?  Check out the list.

Free Fishing Days in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa Coming Up

If you have listened to the Y101 Morning Show over the years you probably know that on Free Fishing Days Dennis Oliver and I would go out and fish live on the air.  Sometimes we were at the Mississippi River.  Other times at ponds and lakes in the area.  Over the years I have caught a few fish during our live broadcast times, but Mr. Oliver has never caught a fish with me during those times or even during off the air times. Not one fish has ever been harvested by him over a 20 or so on and off years of fishing with me.

El Tappe Park Sounds Good to Me!

On Wednesday the news broke that the Quincy Park District was going to develop a new park on the sight of the new Quincy Park District offices on Bonansinga Drive in Quincy. With the new park comes word that the Park District would like for the public to have input into the naming of the park. I am sure there are plenty of names that will be forthcoming as ideas but a friend mine suggested El Tappe Park. To which I say, "public input over".
