Today Marks 40 Years of My Being Behind the Microphone

It's hard to believe that 40 years ago today this wide eyed radio wannabe sat behind the microphone for the first time. The radio station was KIEE in Harrisonville, Missouri which is in the Kansas City area. I won't lie to you, I was scared to death when it became time to talk into the mic.

Flag Raising Efforts all for Naught

A few weeks ago I posted a picture of a flag in Quincy that was tattered and torn and needed to be removed. So with the help of Dawn Whitcomb at the Illinois Veteran's Home who provided me with a new flag, Tim Gottman of Sign Pro and I proceeded to take down the tattered flag and replace it with the new one. That effort was successful at least until yesterday when I went past the location around 8th and Broadway in Quincy.

Today Marks the 29th Anniversary of the Beginning of 99Q Radio

April 25 is a very special day for me and four other people. It was 29 years ago today that 99Q hit the airwaves of the Hannibal-Quincy area. On April 25, 1985 at 5:30 a.m., WQCY-FM changed its format, as well as my life. The format went from “Easy Listening” to “Top 40″ and with it a legacy began.

The Big Dog is Ready for The Batting Cage to Open April 11

With the advent of the 2014 baseball season upon us, the Batting Cage bug has hit me. The bug to go to the batting cage and smash some baseballs around is attacking me like I would a fastball. The bad news is that the Quincy Park District’s Batting Cage is closed. The good news is that it will open for the season on Friday, April 11 at 3:30pm. The countdown is on.

Here is How Quincy’s St. Patrick’s Parade Got Its Start

It was a morning in 1986 when I was working at 99Q Radio with Dennis Oliver. He was just finishing up his morning show and I was beginning my mid-day stint (after working the morning show on WTAD earlier that morning). It was about a week before St. Patrick’s Day and I went up to D.O. and said we need to have a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Quincy.

New Flag Mission Accomplished! The Red White & Blue is Flying Proudly Again

For weeks there has been a very tattered flag "hanging" on a flag pole between 8th and 9th on Broadway in Quincy. I had hoped the owner would have removed or replaced it. That had not happened. No matter where this flag would have been located, it needed to be disposed of. The fact that it was located on Quincy's busiest street made it even worse. Well, I am happy to report that tattered American Flag has been replaced. With the help of my friend, Tim Gottman of Sign Pro, we took down the old flag and hoisted up a new American Flag, which was donated by the Illinois Veteran's Home.

They Say New Technology is Good and We Are About to Find Out

Today at Y101 Radio is the equivalent of the first day at a new school. The initial day at that new school is always an anxiety attack waiting to happen only because of the newness of it all. Well, such is the case for all of us here at the radio station.  Today marks the first day of our usage of a brand new broadcast system and like day one of being in that new school, it is day one for us.

Jerry Leggett’s Blue Devils Were Also Mike Hellenthal’s Blue Devils

Saturday marked the birthday of former Quincy High School Blue Devil Coach Mike Hellenthal who now resides in Marion, North Carolina. So I thought I would take the time to spotlight a man that deserves to get a lot more credit than he ever got for helping the Blue Devil basketball program become one of the most talked about teams in the State of Illinois and beyond. I first met Mike when I arrived in Quincy back in 1978. I came to Quincy to work at WTAD Radio and became the play-by-play announcer for the Blue Devils at perhaps the best time any announcer could walk into Blue Devil Gymnasium.
