This holiday season there will be over 1 billion packages delivered to homes and not all of them will make it to their owners. With online sales in the United States estimated to reach $334 billion, expect more than the usual amount of packages to be placed on doorsteps and porches. Thefts by "Porch Pirates", as they are known, are escalating.

According to NBC, a report from InsuranceQuotes.com released recently finds that an estimated 23 million Americans have had packages stolen from their homes. Meanwhile, UPS, expected to deliver 630 million packages this holiday season, is saying that package theft is rare, but hidden camera video investigations online seem to disagree with that statement.

Police reports in some locations are reporting that in some cases people are actually following delivery trucks around town and searching out locations where packages have been left on porches since the owners were not home.

If you are expecting a package, you might want to alert a neighbor who might be home during the delivery day to keep an eye out for the package for you until you can get home from work or school.

Thieves don't care if it is a holiday season or not. They see money in those packages and will do what it takes to get it.
