Now that summer is over and fall is officially here I thought it just might be time to review some of the old wives' tales of the many signs of fall and just what they mean. Most deal with just what kind of winter we are going to experience in the months ahead. So here are some of these wives' tales.

If a Woolly worm’s head is more black than tan in color the coldest part of winter will come first.

If a woolly worm’s body is more black than brown then it will be a bad winter.

A warm November is a sign of a bad winter coming.

If trees keep their leaves until late in the fall, you can expect a bad winter.

If animals have a thick coat of fur it will be a cold winter.

If berries or nuts are plentiful, it will be a hard winter.

If fruit trees bloom in the fall, the weather will be severe next winter and not this one.

When squirrels bury their nuts early it will be a hard winter.

And finally, if the first snow falls on unfrozen ground, expect a mild winter.

I thought I would end this on an upbeat note. Winter doesn't arrive until December 21. Enjoy your fall days. It is my favorite time of the year.
