It's hard to get new information about what the government thinks is a safe place if the world suddenly becomes a worst-case scenario. That being said, I have found the "newest" FEMA map and it shows that Missouri and Illinois are both in big trouble if the nukes ever fly.

If you look at the FEMA website, you'll find plenty of topics involving possible nuclear weapon scenarios. What you won't find is anything new about what parts of America would be targeted if an enemy were to do the unthinkable.

Buried deep in their archives is this target map from 2015 which shows the specific parts of America that would be the most likely attack locations. Notice there are many Missouri and Illinois targets.

Let's focus just on Missouri and Illinois. You'll notice that military bases are primary targets, but there are other places, too. The purple triangles are targets most likely to be hit in a 500 missile first strike scenario. The black dots are the targets in an all-out 2,000 warhead scenario. (aka "scariest environment imaginable")

Major cities like St. Louis and Kansas City and the capital of Jefferson City would be in jeopardy for obvious reasons. The fact that America's strike force of nuclear B-2 Stealth bombers are based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri means virtually every bad scenario does not end well for the Show Me State.

Why has this become a topic once again? The Russian war in the Ukraine where Putin has threatened nukes against the West is one reason. Recent tensions with China have also played a part.

I grew up during the Cold War where a nuclear exchange with what was then the Soviet Union was always a possibility. Even though the movie "The Day After" (which was based in Missouri) looks outdated now, it's a threat we would do well to remember still exists.
