I will admit that I'm still trying to figure this one out. A new study regarding people choosing to move to California suddenly includes thousands from Missouri. How can this be?

This brand new ranking was just shared by Stacker a couple days ago. It's a breakdown of states that are seeing residents move to California the most. I was absolutely blown away to see Missouri way up the list of states suddenly becoming California transplants.

You might want to sit down for this. In just one year, Missouri saw 6,369 citizens say "I'm going to California" which makes the location of west coast craziness the 6th most popular destination for Missourians who move elsewhere.

Why would anyone move from Missouri to California?

I admit that I felt a little hypocritical laughing at this statistic since I was one of the people that did this myself back in 1992. For me, my career took me there and I'm sure California people are still recovering from my radio show from that era.

Last year, my oldest daughter made that choice, too. For her, it was a career and lifestyle choice and she seems very happy with her decision.

While California rightly gets slammed for its crazy tax rates and regulations (good luck getting a car licensed with their emissions laws), you can't argue that the weather there is much milder (normally) during winter. When I lived in Monterey, California in 1992 and 1993, it was 63 degrees on January 1 and 63 degrees on July 1. The fog rolling off of the ocean every night was amazing, too.

It's easy to laugh at the idea of Missouri people leaving the state for California, but more people are doing it than you realize.
