A new Gallup poll has found that four in ten people report attending church in the last week. That 40% total is not unusual, as weekly church attendance has been between 37% and 49% since 1950.

The State of Utah has the highest amount of church attendance. The State of Vermont has the dubious honor with the lowest amount of church attendance.

The church attendance percentage is similar for the tri-states as well. Missouri came in at 35%, Iowa 32% and Illinois also at 32%. Despite the low percentages, the Gallup poll shows 56% of Americans say religion is very important in their lives.

Results for Gallup poll yearly averages are based on telephone interviews conducted with random samples of adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
