With much of the country in the middle of a nasty heat wave, the air-conditioned comfort of a cineplex might be just what you need — and the two flicks opening in wide release this weekend will keep both adults and kids happy.
Since the box office numbers from last week were not formally released until after the weekend passed, we need to play a quick game of catch-up with ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ The third and final of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies opened to $160 million, a number that is staggering, but not record breaking. Did it even stand a chance of breaking the $200 million mark and challenging ‘The Avengers‘ for highest opening weekend of all time? Did the tragic events in Aurora, Colorado have an adverse effect on the opening gross? To that second question: yes. To that first question: no.
A comical war against aliens, or a dramatic dance war against the one-percent? Pick your cinematic poison, because those are the plotlines of the two new movies opening in wide-release this weekend.

A single new movie opens in wide-release this weekend, but with a whole cavalcade of stars, you may feel like you’re getting several flicks all rolled into one.
With the exception of poor Katy Perry, everyone was a winner at the box office this week. Seriously. Of the top ten films, nine of them either opened well or held well, making this one of the most consistent weekends of the summer season. Filmmakers and studios: pat yourselves on the backs.
