In the months leading up to his passing, Avicii's friends and family members reportedly feared that the EDM star's alleged drinking problem would eventually lead to his death, TMZ reports.

Sources told the tabloid that the producer and electronic artist battled alcoholism for years, and claimed that his alcohol consumption had recently "gotten out of control," further agitating Avicii's pancreatis.

A photo reportedly taken a day before his death revealed the musician hanging out on a yacht with friends, a drink in his hand—though it remains unclear if the beverage was alcoholic or not.

On Monday (April 23), the artist's family released a statement via Billboard. It reads:

“We would like to thank you for the support and the loving words about our son and brother. We are so grateful for everyone who loved Tim’s music and have precious memories of his songs.

Thank you for all the initiatives taken to honor Tim, with public gatherings, church bells ringing out his music, tributes at Coachella and moments of silence around the world.

We are grateful for the privacy during this difficult time. Our wish is that it continues that way.”

On Friday, April 20, Avicii—real name Tim Bergling—was found dead in Muscat, Oman just two years after announcing his retirement from music to focus on his health. He was 28 years old.

“The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given," an initial statement issued on Friday read.
