When the Law Gets in the Way of a Good Thing
I was reading where the schools in Cranston, Rhode Island are banning the annual father-daughter and mother-son events after a single mom complained to the ACLU because her daughter didn't have anyone to take her to the father-daughter dance. With a threat of a lawsuit pending, the schools decided to end the event rather than to pursue it through the courts. What a shame. Here is another opportunity for a bonding between parents and their children negated because of one person. The threat of a lawsuit and the cost to defend themselves has ended another very popular event.
These events occur in our area as well and are very popular but like a cancer, look for someone locally to eventually do the same as this individual did in Rhode Island. I hope that doesn't happen here. Lord knows we need more bonding time with parents and kids and to lose even one opportunity is a bad idea.
How many kids have grown up remembering when their Mom or Dad took them to that event years ago. It's a memory you never lose and those poor kids in Cranston will never get to experience it thanks to one person. And that's too bad.
