Two Girlfriends on Valentine’s Day? Not a Good Idea!

Today is Valentine’s Day. It is a day when people shower their loved ones with flowers, candy and jewelry. It’s also a day of reflection when people look back at previous Valentine’s Days and remember the gifts they gave and the people who received them. I remember my first Valentine’s Day in school in New York.  I was in the 2nd grade and I had a crush on both Lauren Wrightman and her girlfriend Norma Jean Hawkins. In my mind, I was going marry one of them even though I was only 7 years old. Heck, why wait when you find the one (or two) you’re supposed to be with. I remember getting those chalky heart shaped Valentine candies about the size of a dime with a message on them (Do they still make them?). I searched for the one with the verbiage I thought was appropriate for Lauren and Norma Jean. It probably said “Would You be My Valentine?”

After finding it, I went up to them and gave both of them their respective candy. I remember it like it was yesterday. They both looked at me with utter amazement and then read the candy message. Then I waited for their response. It seemed like an eternity for one of them to say something and then it happened. Lauren looked at Norma Jean and Norma Jean looked at Lauren. They both grinned, blushed and then giggled.

It was the start of a wonderful 2nd grade relationship of smiling at each other all the time. Second grade flew by and when third grade came around I went to school on day one with all kinds of anticipation of seeing both of them again after a long summer of no contact. When the roll call was taken, Lauren and Norma Jean were not on it. They both were Air Force kids and moved away during the summer. It was my first heart breaking experience and it came in the 3rd grade.

At the age of 7, I did learn an important lesson though. Having two girlfriends at the same time is not a good thing. It’s a lesson I have always lived by since the 3rd grade. So when you hand out your personalized messaged candy to your loved one make sure you don’t have two candies with the same message. She just might ask “who the other one is for?” Lesson learned!
