The dreaded Polar Vortex has made its way through the area today with temperatures going from the 70's yesterday to the 20's this afternoon and teens tonight. So it just might be a good time to review some cold weather safety tips from the American Red Cross.

1. Wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm including gloves and a hat.

2. Remember to bring your pets inside.  If you can't make sure they have shelter from the cold and wind and a way to get to unfrozen water.

3. Make sure your car's gas tank is filled and all fluids are at proper levels. Also make sure you have blankets and a disaster kit in your vehicle in case you get stranded.

4. Protect your pipes by running water through them even at a trickle to keep them from freezing. Also, keep your cabinet doors open to allow warmer air to circulate the plumbing.

5. If using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surfaced area and at least 3 feet away from items.

6. Turn off space heaters and dose fireplace embers before leaving the room or going to bed.

7. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.

8. If using a fireplace, make sure you have a glass or medal fire screen to catch sparks and rolling logs.

9. Never operate a generator inside of a home, basement or garage.

10. Never hook up a generator to your home's wiring
