The Worst Spring of Our Lifetime is Finally Ending

Tomorrow marks the official arrival of summer. Thank you Jesus! I believe it is safe to assume that we all just lived through the worst Spring of our lifetime. The last full day of Spring officially ends today with summer arriving tomorrow afternoon. It’s officially called the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and it arrives officially at 4:44 p.m. central time Saturday. It is the day when the sun is the furthest to the north that it will get which also means that tomorrow we will have the longest amount of daylight as well.

Summer fans will celebrate the arrival of the Solstice, but I will not because tomorrow will mark when the time of daylight will get shorter each day until the first day of Winter in December. I love it being light almost to 9 p.m. but beginning Saturday the sun will set a little earlier each night, boo, hiss!

With the beginning of Summer marks the beginning of Winter in the Southern Hemisphere. A lot of people think that the earth is as close as it will get to the sun on the first day of summer making our temperatures hot, but that is not a correct statement.

The heat of summer is directly related to the tilt of the earth’s axis. That tilt determines the angle of the sun’s rays on the Earth and thus presents hotter temperatures. There is your science lesson for the day from Professor Dorsey (whatever?).

In any case, summer will arrive officially at 4:44 p.m. Saturday and with it will come an end to a season we will all remember and would rather forget.  Enjoy your extra light tomorrow, you will begin losing it Sunday. Have a happy Summer Solstice Day!
