It is tax season, and with it comes the agony for some of doing their tax returns. It's long hours of putting the numbers together and by the end of the process you probably will be ready to pull your hair out. Well, if you choose to do your own taxes with the comforting thought that the Internal Revenue Service is just a phone call away, good luck.

According to the IRS Commissioner, John Koskinen, in an article in last week's Quincy Herald Whig, only half of the 100 million people expected to call the agency will be able to reach anyone on the other end of the line. Why is that?

Blame it on budget cuts that have caused the IRS to reduce taxpayer services including assisting low income taxpayers will filling out their forms. This couldn't have come at a worse time too as this year there have been changes with the most notable being President Obama's health care law that went into effect in 2014.

In Quincy there is an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center located at 3701 East Lake Center Drive with office hours of 9 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday. Their phone number is 224-8208.

If you are not going to have a tax preparer handle your taxes, I suggest you start work on your taxes now and not wait until closer to the deadline of April 15. Good luck.
