The Quincy Police Department recently participated in a STEP Traffic Enforcement Detail as part of a grant provided through the Illinois Department of Transportation. The detail went from June 22nd through July 3rd.  In that 12 day time period the Q.P.D. issued 121 citations for moving violations and 69 of those were for speeding. The average speed per citation was 14 miles an hour above the posted speed limit.

In addition to the speeding citations, the Q.P.D. cited 15 drivers for failure to wear a seat belt and 11 drivers for driving without insurance.  According to the latest figures from the United states department of Transportation, highway deaths fell to 33, 808 for the year 2009 which was the lowest total since 1950.  Officials credit that to drivers wearing their seat belts and driving the speed limit.
