September 7 – a Big Day in TV History

September 7th is a significant date in TV history. If you grew up watching KHQA or WGEM you undoubtedly watched the Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. Those two shows were pretty stupid but in those time they were funny to watch.

Granny and crew going to Hollywood and a socialite moving to the country. Simple concept and simple viewing. Those two shows brought huge ratings for CBS but they both came to an end on this date, September 7th, in 1971.

Also on this date in TV history, one of the most significant programming ideas to ever hit television started when ESPN hit the airwaves in 1979. This network is so dominant that they now dictate to a variety of leagues just when sporting events can be played. No one ever imagined how huge this network would become in the history of television and to think it started 33 years ago today.
