The City of Hannibal is asking for your help to fight back the Mississippi River. The city is asking for volunteers to fill sandbags today, Thursday, May 2. The operation is taking place at the Street Department maintenance facility at 701 Warren Barrett Drive.  Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and water.  You'll need to sign in when you arrive.

There are several areas unprotected by the flood wall in Hannibal that will require sandbags to prevent damage.  And now, the flood wall itself needs to be shored up.  City crews will be adding height to the wall in anticipation of more rain and water headed our way from the north.

The river levels have been steadily growing over the last few days and surged overnight.  The National Weather Service is predicting a Mississippi River crest of 28.8 feet in Hannibal Saturday.  That would make the levels the third highest in history.

For more information about sandbagging in the days ahead, call Hannibal City Hall at 573-221-0111.
