Report: St. Louis Cardinals Eyeing 2 All-Star Pitchers for 2024

I will confess that I'm not objective about this even one little bit. There's a report that the St. Louis Cardinals are targeting two all-star pitchers for their 2024 roster and I completely hope it happens.

It's no secret that the St. Louis Cardinals 2023 baseball season was a massive disappointment and the lack of quality pitching was a big reason. I've seen multiple sources including Sports Illustrated, Derrick Gould of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and others mention that there are two all-star pitchers that the Cardinals plan to talk to once the off-season begins. They are as follows:

Aaron Nola of the Philadelphia Phillies

Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins

Aaron Nola will be one of the most coveted free agent pitchers as he's only 30 years old and already at the peak of his career. Sonny Gray is 33 and will be 34 at the start of the 2024 season, but has established himself as one of the most reliable starters in baseball.

St. Louis Cardinals top exec John Mozeliak told Sports Illustrated that pitching will be the top priority when building the roster for 2024. The question is will the Cardinals be willing to spend the type of money to be competitive for arms like Nola or Gray. It's possible the team may have to also find trade partners to get the pitching the team so desperately needs.

Teams cannot negotiate with free agents until 5 days after the World Series has ended. That will begin the most compelling off-season for the St. Louis Cardinals in recent memory. We shall see if they can get aces like Nola and Gray when push comes to shove.
