Volunteers Needed Saturday for Fire Safety Campaign

Seven times a day someone in this country dies in a home fire. Countless others suffer injuries. To combat these tragic statistics, the Red Cross two years ago launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over the next five years.

Home fire preparedness campaigns are happening all over the country and involve  Red Cross workers joining with local fire departments and community groups to visit neighborhoods at high risk for fires. Those visits include educating people about fire safety through door-to-door visits and installation of smoke alarms in some of these neighborhoods.

The American Red Cross will be visiting neighborhoods in Quincy this Saturday, April 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to teach people about home fire preparedness and install free smoke alarms where needed.

The Red Cross is encouraging community groups, companies and individuals to help save lives in Quincy by volunteering for this community event. Volunteers are needed on Saturday. Volunteers can register to help by calling the Red Cross at 217-222-2477 or the Quincy Fire Department at 217-228-4459.
