This Saturday night, fireworks displays will be seen by millions around this great country of ours including the Hannibal-Quincy area. In Hannibal it will be held on the riverfront and in Quincy the display will take place at the Illinois Veteran’s Home grounds.  Both will be wonderful to watch and hats off to our friends at WGEM for synchronizing patriotic music to both displays this year.

Although the Veteran’s Home is a nice setting for the Quincy display, and is certainly the place to hold it this year due to the Riverfront  flooding, I truly feel it should move back down to the Riverfront during drier Julys. There is just something to be said about seeing the fireworks over the Mississippi River. If it is too wet, like this summer, it is nice to know the Veteran’s Home is a good backup location.

With the City of Quincy trying to enhance more businesses to the Riverfront, it just seems to be the natural thing to do. I certainly don’t want to deprive any of the veterans from being able to see the display, but the people who have invested money for business development deserve a crowd of thousands in their neighborhood. Plus it might prompt others to invest in the riverfront as well.

Clat Adams and Kesler Parks are wonderful parks but the riverfront needs more than parks and a few businesses. Additional businesses would drive more people to the riverfront area on a consistent basis. The fireworks display just might ignite a few more developments there.
