Quincy University senior and former Quincy Gems second baseman Cody Birdsong was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday.
Birdsong was a mainstay in the Hawks lineup during his two years at Q.U., starting in all 111 games. He recorded a career batting average of .319, including 27 home runs and 92 RBIs.

Birdsong accumulated three All-American honors, five All-Region honors, was a two-time All-GLVC first team selection, and helped the Hawks clinch a GLVC Tournament Championship in 2018.

Three other former Quincy Gems pitchers were selected in the draft as well.  Davis Schwab was also selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 37th round, Riley Boyd was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 28th round and Andrew Peters was chosen in the 21st round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

These selections are a testimony to the talent of the Quincy University Hawks and the Quincy Gems.
