Postal Service to Lose $16 Billion This Year

Last week the Postmaster general, Patrick Donahoe revealed on CBS This Morning that the US Postal Service is facing a $16-billion loss this year alone.

He laid out a plan to reduce some of that loss by eliminating Saturday deliveries and he wants to convince Congress to stop forcing the Postal service to pay $5.5 billion a year for retiree pensions which is about $4.5 billion more than other agencies of similar sizes get.

When I hear these unbelievable amounts of money that agencies will be losing I have to wonder, how did we ever get to this point?  For the past ten years I thought it would be a good idea to forego the Saturday mail delivery. But for the past ten years we still have Saturday mail delivery despite all the rhetoric about stopping it for the past decade.  Why hasn't been done?

Well, the main reason is the postal union or the National Association of Letter Carriers. The NALC doesn't feel cutting Saturday delivery will solve the problem.

So here we are again with two stalemated sides digging in and the end result will be electronic mail and text messaging. Before you know it, there will be no delivery of mail. Lets see who will dig in then.
