National TV Shows That Featured Stories From the Quincy / Hannibal Area

Every once in a a while our region ends up on national television. A story from Quincy was highlighted on Investigation Discovery's new series 'Untouchable: Power Corrupts,' and the same network also told the story of a Hannibal murder on an episode of 'Happily Never After.' A Quincy native also won the Search for the Weight Watchers Chef, and Momo the Missouri Monster got a profile on 'Monsters and Mysteries in America.' Here is a look at stories, places and people from our area that received attention from national TV shows.

Feasting on Asphalt

Alton Brown of the Food Network made a stop in Quincy and learned how to make a Maid-Rite. Brown was filming the second season of the series 'Feasting on Asphalt.' Quincy appeared in episode four. Brown also went across the river and made a stop at the 18 Wheeler in Taylor, Missouri.

The Steve Wilkos Show

The story of missing Hannibal woman Christina Whittaker was told in 2010 on an episode of 'The Steve Wilkos Show.' Whittaker went missing in 2009. In addition to 'The Steve Wilkos Show,' her story has also been profiled by several news stations across the country, and on 'Nancy Grace.'

The Chew

On February 19, 2014, Quincy native Ryan Hutmacher won the grand prize in the Search for the Weight Watcher's Chef contest on the ABC program 'The Chew.' Ryan is currently based in Chicago, where he is a co-founder of the culinary studio Centered Chef. As the winner of the competition, Ryan earned a $75,000 grand prize, and a one-year consulting contract with Weight Watchers as the Weight Watchers Chef.

Happily Never After

On April 15, 2010, Sandra Fugate of Hannibal was murdered, two days before she was to be married to Calvin Duane Pettey. Pettey was later found guilty of the murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Fugate's story was told in 2013 on 'Happily Never After,' a true-crime television series on Investigation Discovery.

Monsters and Mysteries in America

Momo the Missouri Monster recently received some attention from Destination America's popular program 'Monsters and Mysteries in America.' The show about show about local legends, monsters and cryptids from around the United States featured a segment on the Bigfoot-like creature reportedly sighted in Louisiana, Missouri. Quite a bit of local footage was shot in Louisiana for the show. If you missed the episode, there's a good chance you can catch it in reruns, as 'Monsters and Mysteries in America' is often on the Destination America schedule.

Elder Skelter

'Elder Skelter' is a new true-crime series on Investigation Discovery. The focus of the show is "shocking stories of senior citizens who committed cold, calculated crimes." The third episode of the series told the story of Steven Watkins, who was murdered in Ashland, Illinois in 2008. Shirley Skinner, the grandmother of Watkins’ ex-wife, was convicted of the man’s murder.

Untouchable: Power Corrupts

The premiere episode of Investigation Discovery's 'Untouchable: Power Corrupts' told the story of  Dr. Michael Swango, a Quincy native who is currently serving three life sentences after confessing to four murders. It is suspected that he could have been involved in up to 60 murders. Some also suspect Swango's involvement in the Tylenol poisoning case in the early 1980s.
