Here's something that's kind of fun to do. It only takes a second, and you might discover that you are owed some money that you didn't even know about. I did a search at Missouri's Unclaimed Property Database on the State Treasurer's website and found out that I was owed ... $0.89! Maybe you'll have more luck than I did.

According to ShowMeMoney.com: "Unclaimed Property consists of cash from bank accounts, stocks, bonds and contents of safe deposit boxes that have been abandoned ... Other types of Unclaimed Property include uncollected insurance policy proceeds, government refunds, utility deposits and wages from past jobs. Unclaimed Property does not handle real property such as land, houses, cars and boats."

It's easy to do a search. Just go to the Unclaimed Property Database and enter your name. If there are any results, it will show your name, your city (in case there are multiple people with your name running around the state), and how much you might be owed.

If you have lived in another state, you can also go to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators' website and do a similar search.

I used to live in Georgia, so I searched their site and also found a result. Unfortunately, the Georgia website doesn't tell you how much you are owed like the Missouri site does, so I had to request that documentation be sent to me in the mail. I'm hoping it's for a little more than $0.89.
