Letter Carriers to Hold an Online Food Collection

For most of you reading this, going hungry means needing a snack between meals, but for many going hungry means eating just one meal a day if they can find one.

Complicating things is the pandemic which has caused layoffs and total loss of jobs.  This has led to people who normally may have donated food to a local food pantry in the past to having to be there to actually get food for themselves and their family.

The numbers are staggering.  According to the USDA’s latest report, more than 35 million people experience hunger in the United States. It is well documented that the food pantries in our local area have had an extreme need for non-perishable food items for months. The demand far exceeds the supply.

Well, here is an opportunity to help without having to go to one of those pantry locations complements of the area letter carriers. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) are teaming up for their 29th Annual “Stamp Out Hunger” National Food Drive this Saturday, May 8. Thanks to the pandemic, this year's event is being held online

NALC is the chief organizer of the nation’s largest one-day food drive in the nation. The NALC effort is held annually on the second Saturday in May in 10,000 cities and towns in every part of the country. The food drive has collected more than 1.3 billion pounds of food since the national drive began back in 1992.
