Everyone loves looking a Christmas lights and for many it is a holiday tradition. Such is the case for the City of Hannibal. The Hannibal Parks & Recreation is hoping to make it easier for people to find those houses that show off holiday spirit.

Once again the Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department will be holding their annual Holiday House Decorating Contest. The citizens of Hannibal are being asked to decorate their home for the holidays and take an exterior photo or video of it for judging.

Anyone who sends in an entry is on a list of decorated houses for the contest portion, but the main idea is to provide a list to people who want to see the lights and decorations.

Categories for prizes are:

  • Clark Griswold
  • Mayor’s Choice
  • People’s Choice (Facebook Vote)
  • Most Holiday Spirit
  • Creative Use of Lights
  • Best Commercial Building, a new category, which allows business to participate

Entries will be judged by the Hannibal Mayor James Hark, Hannibal Arts Council Director Michael Gaines, Hannibal Chamber of Commerce Director McKenzie Disselhorst and others. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will be the photo with the most likes and/or comments on the Hannibal Parks Facebook page. Winners will receive a prize donated by FACT (Families and Communities Together), along with a sign donated by Park Place Sign Systems.

Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. December 13, with the judging being done on December 14. The contest is open to all Hannibal residents. If you would like a copy of the rules for the contest, they are available at the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Office at 320 Broadway or at the Hannibal Parks & Recreation website of: www.hannibalparks.org

Addresses of entries will be available at participating downtown merchants, on Hannibal Parks & Recreation website, www.hannibalparks.org; and photos and addresses will be available on the Hannibal Parks Facebook page.  Email submissions can be made to: jmcdonald@hannibal-mo.gov
