About the time the NFL is wrapping up, Hannibal's semi-pro football team is ramping up for its season. Yes, Hannibal has a semi-pro football team! It's a little-known and under-appreciated fact.

The Hannibal Falcons kicked off in 2013. They play home games at Porter Stadium and travel around the tri-state region to tackle other semi-pro teams. And these guys are good! They're 7-1 on the season, having just suffered their first loss last weekend to the Decatur Thundercats 65-41.

The Falcons feature local talent. Monroe City's Toby O'Cheltree quaterbacks and his brother Andy plays a mean defense. Former Monroe City standout Kent Holland Jr is a running back. Quincians Cody Bunch and Daylin Anders also suit up for the Falcons. Other teammates come from Ralls, Pike, Clark and Lewis counties, with a few others from the St. Louis and Columbia areas.

These games can be high-scoring affairs. Earlier in the season, the Falcons beat the Burlington Express 83-0 and then the Peoria Punishers by a 73-32 margin.

You don't have a lot more opportunities to see the Hannibal Falcons this season. Playoffs start this weekend. The Falcons play the River Valley Vipers on Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m. at Porter Stadium.
