The Super Bowl is Sunday. It's the one time of the year when you actually want to watch commercials on TV. Some people even DVR them. A record amount of money is being spent by advertisers for this year's game, according to Advertising Age. Here are a few fun facts about Super Bowl commercials that might surprise you.

  • In 2016, the total amount being spent on Super Bowl advertising is $377 million. That's more than the total ad spend for Super Bowl commercials in the 60s, 70s and 80s combined!
  • A Super Bowl commercial in 2016 costs, on average, $160,000 per second!
  • If you're wondering if the price of Super Bowl ads have ever decreased, the answer is yes. The price fell five times in Super Bowl history: 1971, 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2010.

Do you have a favorite Super Bowl commercial? You know what's weird? We always talk about how great the ads are during the Super Bowl, but there are very few of them that I can actually remember. I remember the Budweiser Clydesdale's commercial after September 11. I vaguely recollect Coke's polar bears from the 1990s, and I remember the Volkswagen Darth Vader kid from a few years ago. That's about it.

If you're a big fan of Super Bowl commercials, Advertising Age has launched its Ad Age Super Bowl Special Report, which contains news, trends, data and videos about the evolution of Super Bowl commercials. The report is being updated daily, and will continue to be updated after the game.

Ad Age also has a few predictions for the upcoming Super Bowl commercials: “The last couple of years, it felt that marketers were getting a little heavy—whether they were being sentimental or preachy. We expect things will swing back to the lighter side this year with more comedy and celebrities. And we’re already seeing a lot of new brands shelling out for ads,” said Ad Age Editor Ken Wheaton. “Sadly, though, we might not get as many puppies or horses as in years past. And we also just might see more marketers keep their ads under wraps until the game.”
