Former Quincy University Hawks basketball coach Steve Hawkins will be on the sidelines today guiding his Western Michigan Broncos against the highly touted Syracuse University Orangemen in the second round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. The game can be seen this afternoon locally on KHQA-TV with a 2:45pm scheduled start time.

The Orange, the third seed in the South, are 27 and 5 on the season. Number 14 Western Michigan will take a record of 22 and 9 into the contest in Buffalo, New York where the crowd will be pro Syracuse since the two cities are just 138 miles apart.

Hawkins' Broncos, champion of the Mid-American Conference, are in the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade and fourth in school history, and they have experience on their side. They're led by a pair of fifth-year seniors - 6-foot-11 center Shayne Whittington and guard David Brown - and 6-foot-6 sophomore forward Connar Tava.  Brown led the MAC with 19.4 points per game and earned MVP of the conference tournament.

Again, the game is scheduled to be broadcast on CBS (KHQA-TV locally) this afternoon at 2:45 with Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery handling the play-by-play and color.  Good luck to my friend Steve Hawkins.  Go "Hawk"!
