Finally the day has almost arrived for thousands in the State of Illinois and here in Quincy. Tomorrow is “Opening Day”, or at least partially, in the Land of Lincoln. For both Illinois home-owners and shoppers the long-awaited "home opener" is this Friday for garage sales! This event in itself is huge for people around here as hundreds of garage sales are held each week in this area on a normal basis.  But, this is no normal garage sale season for sure. As a matter of fact there are strict guidelines garage sale holders and shoppers are being asked to adhere to during the Coronavirus crisis.

As of tomorrow, May 29, 2020, garage or yard sales will be allowed in the City of Quincy under Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan.  Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) approved safety guidance must be observed according to Quincy Deputy Chief of Police, Shannon Pilkington.

Listed below are the stipulations one should follow when holding or shopping at a garage or yard sale.

Social distance of at least six-feet should be maintained between non-household members.

If social distance can’t be maintained a face covering shall be worn.

Exceptions will be made for people with medical conditions or disabilities that prevent them from safely wearing a face covering.

It is recommended to clean and disinfect any surface touched by multiple people every 2 hours.

If a garage/yard sale is held in yard, driveway, or residential garage only five people per 1000 square feet will be allowed.

I think we can all agree that it is not ideal, but it is a start.
