Forbes Magazine has released its annual “Most Dangerous Cities” list for large cities in the United States. Forbes started compiling the list with information from the FBI’s Crime Statistics database, screening cities with populations above 200,000. Here is the top ten dangerous cities and their number of victims per 100,000 people.

10.Milwaukee          1295 per 100,000 people

9.  Atlanta                1379 per 100,000 people

8.  Cleveland           1384 per 100,000 people

7.  Baltimore            1405 per 100,000 people

6.  Birmingham        1518 per 100,000 people

5.  Stockton, Ca.     1548 per 100,000 people

4.  Memphis             1750 per 100,000 people

3.  St. Louis              1777 per 100,000 people

2.  Oakland               1993 per 100,000 people

1.  Detroit                  2123 per 100,000 people

Of the ten listed above, Milwaukee and Birmingham surprised me the most.  I would not consider them to be very dangerous places to visit.  Remember that these are cities with populations above 200,000 people.

There are many more dangerous cities with smaller populations including Flint, Michigan which had an incredible record-busting murder rate of 63 per 100,000.  to put that into perspective, that would be approximately 25 murders for the City of Quincy (42,000 people) in one year.

Count your blessings we live in this community and not in those other locations.
