Adams County Health Department Reports Norovirus Outbreak

The Adams County Health Department (ACHD) has noticed an increase in acute gastroenteritis outbreaks throughout Adams County. Norovirus is a common cause of diarrhea and/or vomiting in persons, especially during cold weather months. Symptoms typically resolve within one to three days without medical attention. However, some persons may become dehydrated and need medical attention. Norovirus can be spread from person to person or though foods contaminated by persons infected.

Here are some basic tips from the ACHD for reducing transmission in facilities:

1. Good hand hygiene is the best way to reduce transmission of norovirus.

2. Initiate an investigation promptly and maintain a line list of persons reporting diarrhea and/or vomiting. Include onset of symptoms and duration.

3. Make sure staffs, including food handlers, do not work while experiencing gastrointestinal illness.

4. High touch surfaces and communal spaces should be cleaned and disinfected more frequently during an outbreak.

5. Staff and client education.

6. Post signage and visitor restriction when applicable.

7. Proper glove and protective equipment use.
