A.C.H.D. to Host Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Do you have oil-based paint, old household cleaning supplies, lawn and garden chemicals? Illinois residents with these and other types of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) who are looking to do a little cleaning and clear them out of their basements and garages will have the opportunity to dispose of these materials at a free upcoming HHW collection event.
This event will be held Saturday, October 12 at the Adams County Highway Department (101 N 54th St. in Quincy) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This opportunity for safe, legal disposal of HHW items is open to all Illinois residents.
Waste materials that will be accepted at the event include:
Used motor oil
Aerosol paints and pesticides
Fluorescent lamp bulbs
Unwanted medications (excludes Controlled Substances)
Residents should note that latex paint will not be accepted at the event. Latext paint is not hazardous and can be safely discarded in a regular trash receptacle once it is dried out. Removing the lid of the paint can and leaving it open to the air will allow it to dry over a period of days. Kitty litter can be added to speed up the drying process.
Other materials that will not be accepted at the event include:
Business/commercial sector wastes
Explosives and ammunition
Farm machinery oil
Lead acid batteries
The event is a collaborative effort by the Adams County Health Department and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA).
