October is Fire Prevention Month and the Quincy Fire Department is doing its part to make people safer by providing FREE smoke detectors to Quincy residents. These new detectors are made available through a partnership between First Alert, Kidde and the American Red Cross. The Q.F.D. will even install the smoke detectors if need be for your home.

I recently had the opportunity to talk on the Y101 Radio Morning Show with Quincy Fire Department Information Officer Jerry Smith about the smoke detector program.

Recently a new law in Illinois requires that traditional battery operated smoke detectors be transitioned over to new 10-year sealed battery detectors before the year 2023.  These new smoke detectors comply with that new regulation.

Since 1988 all dwelling units in Illinois have been required  to have smoke detectors and alarms. The problem is many off them have had the batteries removed or were no longer good. Some of those faulty detectors unfortunately led to the loss of life. If you don't need a new detector, at least make sure the batteries work in the one you have.
