It was on July 18, 1879 that F.W. Woolworth opened his first 5 and 10 cent store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He sold no items for more than a dime. Unfortunately, he went broke a short time later. It is funny how Americans consume certain foods with certain holidays. Like turkey on Thanksgiving Day and corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day. Both could be eaten anytime of the year, but we seem to usually devour it on the appropriate holiday instead. Of course the turkey is an All-American bird and it fits the holiday in November. But, in what may surprise many, corned beef and cabbage is not the main staple in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day.

Time to Expand Amtrak Routes to Hannibal and the West

It has been over a year ago when the Quincy Herald Whig, in their Five on Five feature, asked the question Is Amtrak Passenger Rail Service Between Hannibal and Quincy a Good Idea?” The consensus over a year ago was that it is a good idea. I agreed then and I still agree now. Last year a group in Hannibal was looking into the feasibility of developing passenger rail service from Hannibal to Quincy and beyond. It is the “beyond” that made the idea intriguing.
