Rick Hummel Addresses the Quincy Exchange Club

The Quincy Exchange Club was honored to have Baseball Hall of Famer and sportswriter for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Rick Hummel, as its speaker today.  Hummel, a Quincy native and 1964 graduate of Quincy High School, became the first Quincy person inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in July of 2007 when he received the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for baseball writing.

To put on a Veteran's Parade is one thing but to get a B-25 Bomber fly over during the parade is another.

Veteran’s Parade in Quincy is Saturday at 10am

It's Veteran's Day weekend and there are plenty of activities planned in the area including the 5th Annual Veteran's Day Parade tomorrow in Quincy.

Last year there were 92 entries and this year the total is 93. The parade goes from 12th to 5th on Maine and begins at 10am.

In the midst of running to and from the radio station on Saturday I had the chance to squeeze in a few minutes to attend Rich Howell's 80th birthday party at Madison Park Church.

Rich and I go back a few years with both of us being Exchange Club members and also board members for the Quincy Regional Crime Stoppers.

Smoke on the River Begins Tonight

It's Smoke on the River Weekend complements of the Quincy Exchange Club.  Over 40 professional cookers will be setting up their barbecue rigs at Kesler Park in Quincy competing for the $5000 in prize money this year plus the right to advance to the American Royal National BBQ competition in Kansas City, Missouri. There is no charge to attend.

Hazel Mills-Golden Deeds Winner

Friday, I attended the Golden Deeds banquet put on annually by the Quincy Exchange Club. This year’s winner of the Book of Golden Deeds was Hazel Mills. Hazel is, well suffice to say, a senior citizen. Now she may be elderly, but this woman acts and moves about like someone in her 50’s at least.

You’ve Got to Play the Cards You’re Dealt

I was at my weekly Friday Exchange Club meeting last Friday (April 20th). It was a meeting where the annual Bud Willer/A.C.E. award was presented to an outstanding student who has overcome a disability to succeed. The Exchange Club annually presents a $1000 scholarship to the recipient of the award.
