OK you summer sun worshipers, your day has arrived.  Today marks the official arrival of summer. It's officially called the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.   It is the day when the sun is the furthest to the north that it will get which also means that we will have the longest amount of daylight today as well.  From now on the sun will set a little earlier each night. Today also marks the beginning of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.  A lot of people think that the earth is as close as it will get to the sun today making our temperatures hot but that is not a correct statement.  The heat of summer is directly related to the tilt of the earth's axis.  That tilt determines the angle of the sun's rays on the earth and thus presents hotter temperatures.  There is your science lesson for the day from Professor Dorsey (whatever?).  In any case, summer will arrive officially at 6:09pm this evening and with it will come visits to Indian Mounds, Jackson and Wavering pools, cookouts, boating and other outdoor activities.  Remember your sun screen and enjoy you extra light today. Happy Summer Solstice Day!
