This weekend, I am going to spend some time with my dad, who was a veteran.

He served proudly in the Army back in the late 1930's. Then came home and started a job as an auto mechanic  He was very good at what he did. He knew cars inside and out. I did not get his talent in that area, but that was all right with him.

He got dirty everyday at a hard job, he told me. He wanted me to be better than him at what I chose to do. I do remember him coming home day after day or night after night after he helped get a truck started or a transmission fixed on some lonely road in the middle of the night. But he was good. Very good at what he did.

Dad was a veteran and proud of it. So this weekend, I'm going to Pittsfield to spend some time with my dad, who I miss. We will talk baseball, which he taught me. And we will talk basketball, which he taught me as well. He was proud of me as he watched me play sports in high school and college. I was not very good, but he and mom kept cheering me on. So, I am going to see Dad this Veteran's day weekend, tell him thank you for your service, Dad. I am so proud of you and miss you and love you.
