It was the follow heard 'round the world. Zayn Malik, former One Direction member and former fiance to Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, sent rumors flying into the stratosphere when he—during a recent Twitter spree of cryptic tweets and generous follows—followed American pop sweetheart Selena Gomez.

The earth ceased turning. Fans around the world gasped. Hearts went a-flutter. There were passionate cries of, "What about Bieber!?"

The social media gesture was, of course, interpreted as a flirtatious move on behalf of the British heartthrob, and there have been whisperings ever since that Zayn and Selena (Zaylena?) could eventually, you know, be a thing.

Alas, in an interview with BBC Radio 1 on August 14, Selena shuts the rumors down—sweetly, of course. "The Heart Wants What It Wants" singer explained that while it wasn't "weird" that Zayn followed her on Twitter, as the two know each other in real life, she really had no idea what people were gossiping about as she didn't even realize Zayn had followed her account until it was pointed out to her. After all, the girl does have over 30 million followers, so it's probably a bit difficult to keep track!

“I had no idea what that was until somebody else asked me, and obviously I know Zayn, though, so it’s not like a weird thing,” she said during the radio interview, adding playfully, “I just didn’t know who followed me. Thanks for the follow, Zayn!” Even more entertaining (and maybe a little shady), when asked if Selena had followed him back yet, the pop artist admitted she hadn't. “Did I [follow him back]? I don’t know, I don’t think I did but I will right now," she promised. "I should do it."

As of the moment, she still hasn't made good on that promise.
